Vehicles

1901 Lanchester
Registration Number FRW 766

The car was built in 1901 and is a two cylinder 12 HP vehicle with a tonneau body. The engine is located between the front and back seats and the vehicle is steered by a tiller. The car had a warning bell operated by foot. There was a story told by my father that in London one day, the bell was used behind a bus which then swerved out of the way, the driver thinking there was a police car behind trying to get past.

Archie became associated with the car through having his own car serviced at Collingwood Motors in Camberley. The garage proprieter, George Upton, kept and maintained the Lanchester in his garage. He had previously worked on the Lanchester production line and was friends with one of the owners, George Lanchester. It is possible that Archie provided some financial support to the upkeep of the car.

Between 1933 and 1953, the car had participated in the annual London to Brighton veteran car run, having been entered variously by Frederick Lanchester, George Lanchester, George Upton and P Simpson. Archie was a passenger on one of these runs in the early 1950's. The car also took part in a run from London to Windsor in which Archie's son Stewart was a passenger. Archie was on board when the car was taken to Le Touquet in 1951.

A notable previous owner, and probably the first owner of this car, was Rudyard Kipling. The car was also amongst those which took part in the making of the film Genevieve and Archie was on board on that occasion. The car continues to be regularly entered into the London to Brighton run.

The car went into preservation with The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and now normally resides in the National Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire. It is believed, that sometime early in in preservation, the car suffered major damage in an accident whilst out on the road.

After Archie's death, his wife received a letter from the Veteran Car Club regarding refund of annual subscription.
