Holiday in Okehampton, Devon in 1990

This holiday was spent with friends Hans and Ynskje from Holland joined them in a building which formed part of the farmyard at Bowerland Farm outside Okehampton. The building itself had originally been a Cromwellion longhouse. It was reasonably comfortable but was quite basic and the the staircase was very ramshackle. One day Malcolm slipped on the way down, making quite a clatter on the way, and startling everyone into silence.

The owner and his wife were very friendly and offered milk each morning which came directly from the milking parlour. They also allowed the family to accompany the cows when they were put out to pasture. The very docile bull Rambo also walked with them.

They arrived for their holiday on Saturday 15 April. The next day they went out walking over Dartmoor starting from Meldon on the outskirts of Okehampton and taking in Black Tor and Yes Tor. On Monday, Malcolm photogtaphed some of the former railway line at Bowerland before the family and their friends went out into Dartmoor in the car and visited Whistman's Wood.

On Wednesday they all went to Lydford Gorge. Also during the holiday, Malcolm and James explored the old railway around Weeks-in-the-Moor. There were daily trips into Okehampton to buy warm pasties fresh from the baker.
