Holiday in the Lake District in 1961

Malcolm had been so impressed with his holiday in the Lake District the previous year that he arranged to take his brother Stewart over Easter 1961. This time they would travel to Kendal by coach, using the
'Gay Hostess' express sleeper double decker from Victoria coach station. However, because of the extra holiday traffic, they actually had an old and cramped single decker and the journey was slow and uncomfortable.

When they arrived the weather was very cold and wet. They found accommodation over a café in Kendall run by a man who dressed like Davy Crockett. They had only taken summer clothes based on conditions on the trip the previous year, so they were cold and wet for the entire holiday.

The holiday was miserable and the boys felt cold the entire time. They did not travel far as it was raining much of the time. The trip home was better as they travelled on the correct bus which had reclining seats.
