Holiday in the Lake District in 1960

Malcolm's colleague Hamish Thew came from the Lake District. He planned to visit there over the 1960 Whit bank holiday weekend along with his old friend Peter who also came from there. Malcolm was invited to join them to stay with Peter's mother at Troutbeck. They all set off directly after work in London on Friday night and headed up the M1 in Peter's small car. They hardly stopped at all on the way and arrived in the early hours of Saturday.

On Saturday Malcolm and Hamish went into Windermere then on to Ambleside. They then walked on the fells around High Sweden Bridge where they decided to push a large round rock which went tumbling down the fellside. It was a dangerous thing to do and they got quite worried when it seemed to be out of control and in danger of doing some damage.

That night they visited the Queens Head pub in Troutbeck. The McEwans Export ale proved a bit too much for them and they were not fit to travel home so they were allowed to sleep in the barn. Having thought it would be free, they were surprised in the morning to find that the landlord was charging them.

On Sunday the boys climbed up Red Screes. From there they walked down to the Kirkstone Pass pub for a 'hair of thre dog' then on up towards Raven's Edge. They came across a couple of injured sheep from which crows had pecked out the eyes so they found a farmer to report it. The three boys went to another pub that evening and consequently annoyed Peter's mother with silly bahaviour when they got back.

Om Whit Monday they all took a walk up Kentmere before setting off back to London in the afternoon. The weather over that weekend had been magnificent, warm and sunny all the time, although it could be breezy on the fells.
