1902 Lanchester motor car

The first two pictures were taken on the London to Brighton run, probably in 1951, but on a traditionally wet day. Archie Smith is seated behind the driver, George Upton, who had formerly worked on the production line of the Lanchester Motor Company.

The two lower pictures were taken on the 1952 run. On this occasion Archie is seated behind George on the near side with George Lanchester driving.

The car is a two cylinder 12 HP with a tonneau body and by the year 2006 it had been added to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust museum in Coventry. It has regularly been entered into the London to Brighton run. Between 1933 and 1953 it was variously entered by Frederick Lanchester, George Lanchester, George Upton and P Simpson. A notable previous owner was Rudyard Kipling. The car was also amongst those which took part in the making of the film Genevieve.

There are more pictures of a run to Windsor.

After his death, Archie's wife received a letter from the Veteran Car Club regarding refund of annual subscription.
