John Osment was born in 1821 in Clifton Maybank, Beer Hackett in Dorset and was the younger of the only two known children of James and Mary Osment. The 1841 census lists him as living at Trill Farm in Beer Hackett with his sister and parents. Seth Osment is also living with them but his relationship is not known.
John married Ann Elizabeth Toop in Beer Hackett on 11 August 1846. Thereafter she joined the Osment household where john was assisting his father with the farm. Daughter Martha Ann was born in 1848, Harriet in 1849 and son John Jacob in 1851. The family is still in living and farming in Trill according to the 1851 census plus a nurse and two servants. John probably left Trill Farm when his father died in 1854.
Son Ellis was born in Curry Rivel in 1854 and daughter Mary in 1857 in Ilminster. By the time the 1861 census was taken, John and his family had moved to Thornfield in Dorset where was was working as an agricultural labourer. Daughter Charlotte was born there in 1862 but son Thomas George was born in Stoke Gregory, Somerset.
When the census of 1871 was taken, John is a dairyman in West Milton, Powerstock in Dorset with his wife Ann, daughter Charlotte and son Thomas. Ten years later, in the 1881 John and Ann are back in Thornfield with son Thomas and John as working as an agricultural labourer. John's wife Ann died later that year.
The 1891 census shows widower John living with his son Thomas and family in Meare Green, Stoke St.Gregory in Somerset. He passed away in 1899 and his death was registered in the Portsea district.
