Profile Index for WHEATON

Elsie Joyse Wheaton was born in Tottenham, Middesex on 19 November 1880. She was a daughter of Charles Robert and Jessie Wheaton. Her name was recorded as Elsie Joyce on her birth certificate, but she was baptised as Elsie Joyse, and that is how she was known.

The census of 1881 shows the family living at 4 Wilton Cottages in Chesnut Road, Tottenham, Middlesex. By 1891, they had moved to 16 Ruskin Road in Tottenham and in 1901 they were at 1 Talbot Road.

Elsie was baptised at Holy Trinity in Tottenham, Middlesex on 13 September 1885. Also baptised at that time were all her brothers and sisters that had been born by that date.

Elsie married widower Frank Barratt at St.Michael-at-Bowes parish church on 20 April 1914. He was part of the Barratt sweet manufacturig company family and was 25 years older than her. Their daughter and only child Elsie Doreen was born the following year.

The census of 1921 shows the family living at Ashridge in Chase Road, Southgate, Middlesex. In the household was French citizen Cécile Pouzene who was the nursery governess, cook Edith A Grace and parlourmaid Ellen Kelsey.

Elsie's husband Frank passed away on 18 October 1928 and she was executor and beneficiary of his Will. At that time, the family were still living at Ashridge.

In 1933, Elsie and her daughter were living at Ashridge, Chase Road in Southgate, Middlesex. She made her Will on 18 February that year bequeathing everything to her daughter. The Will was witnessed by Margaret J Gifford who was living in the house and was probably companion to Elsie. Later in 1933, Elsie and her daughter are recorded as sailing back to Southampton aboard RMS Windsor Castle. It is not known where they had been or where they boarded.

The 1939 register finds Elsie and her daughter living at Oak Field in Gill Head, Ulverstone, Westmorland. Also listed at that address was Theresa Jordan who was the same age as Elsie's daughter, but no connection is known. There is a possibility that the place was a guest house and Elsie and her daughter were on holiday.

Elsie and her daughter moved house to 53 Deansway in East Finchley. However, Elsie was at 47 Beech Hill in Enfield, Middlesex when she passed away on 18 March 1966. Probate was granted to her daughter Elsie Doreen on 18 August the same year, the estate being valued at £298,145 15s 0d.
