Classrooms

The photograph below shows a typical classroom and this one could be a V form room. Boys had their own desk in their base classroom in which they would keep their books, exercise books and writing equipment then carry items with them if they went to another classroom for specific lessons. In Malcolm's case. he was in Vb but went up to Va for French tuition under Mr.Rigg.

When an exercise book was full, the master would sign the back to autorise the issue of a replacement from the stationery store. The store was only open for a short time each day and was manned by a person from outside the school. The occasional additional exercise book for personal use was sometime obtained by copying a master's signature. The signatures of Mr.Adams or Mr.Ricketts were the easiest to copy and the stationer was not likely to know a boy's form master.

The desks were wooden with a lifting flap to access the storage and with a pen groove and inkpot slot on top. The seat was attached to the desk.

There were labatories for biology classes and the VI form science subjects.
