Thomas Augustus Podbury was born in Harpford, Devon on 6 June 1855, the second and younger child of James and Elizabeth Podbury.
Thomas' father had been unwell for some time and he passed away in February 1857. The 1861 census finds Thomas and his brother John living with the grandparents John and Mary Ann Harding at Core Hill between Sidbury and Sidmouth. His mother had taken work as a ladies maid in Dunsford on the Exeter side of Dartmoor. His whereabouts in 1871 is not known.
Thomas found his way to London and was living at 57 Coldharbour Lane in Lambeth when, on 7 August 1878, he married Louisa Bugler. Daughter Louisa Augusta was born on 11 April 1880.
The 1881 census records that Thomas was working as a clerk with a wholesale confectioner and was then living with his family at 6 Allendale Road in Camberwell. Son Ernest John was born at that address on 20 March 1882 and daughter Maud Alice on 23 April 1884.
Thomas was only 30 years old when he died at home at 73 Landcroft Road, East Dulwich in Surrey on 28 April 1886, having suffered chronic atrophy of the liver. The death certificate gave his occupation as mercantile clerk. His wife Louisa was with him at his death and survived him until 1919.
