Wendy Dorothea Parsons was born at Litton Nursing Home in Reading Road, Farnboroughm Hampshire at 11:30 pm on 13 April 1943. Her twin sister Wendy was born one hour later and was a surprise to her mother as she was not expected. She was only 3lbs in weight and her heartbeat had not been detected in the womb. She was so weak at birth that she was not expected to survive and was was baptised in the hospital. Despite being twins, the two girls were totally unalike and would not even necessarily be taken as sisters.

Wendy had an elder brother Michael who was seven years older and the family lived in a two bedroom bungalow at 13 Manor Road in Farnborough. Their father was a keen photographer and took many pictures of the children in their early years. As her parents both came from Liverpool, the family often took trips up to there to visit relatives.

At one year old, the twins contracted whooping cough. Immediately after they caught scarletina and they had to be put in isolation in hospital with their mother. The bungalow had to be fumigated. Their uncle, aunt and cousins had been staying and her cousin Francis came down severely with scarlet fever.

During the war, Wendy's father had kept chickens in the garden but after it was cleaned out and used by the girls as a playhouse.

When she was five years old, Wendy started attending St.Peter's Infant School in Farnborough Street with her sister and was initially in Miss Hall's class. Also that year, the family started taking their annual summer holiday at Hayling Island where they had a regular booking for the same chalet each year. Whilst they were away, Wendy's uncle John and aunt Edna came with their children from Liverpool to stay in the bungalow in Farnborough.
