Overview  of  ARCHBALD / ARCHIBALD

Chart Descendancy List of Names

This line is of particular interest bacause of it's lingering connection with the SMITH family. The link is from the marriage of
Agnes Letitia Archbald to Harvey Harding in 1880. Their daughter Agnes Sophia Harding married Thomas Smith in 1905 and thereafter the name Archbald was carried as a middle name by some male descendants.

The spelling of the name varies on documentation between Archbald and Archibald. For the purposes of the family history, generally the name as registered at birth is used.

Research is ongoing on this line of Archbald and, at present, the earliest most reliable ancestor is John Archbald (1783-1821), a Tailor from Edinburgh. Due to the lack of clear evidence, it has been difficult to progress further back but now there is more confidence that he originated in Kelso.

John's son William migrated down to London in the first quarter of the 19th century along with other Scots who settled in the area of King's Cross. Many of them seem to have been associated with the printing industry. His wife, Agnes Renton, whom he married in London, was another Scottish migrant. They had five children. Their eldest, John Renton Archbald, proved to be a colourful character, moving between various different jobs. He married Sophia Gilfoy in 1859 and they had six children. He then married Louisa Jane Bickmore in 1883, seeming illegally, and they one child that died in infancy. Then, sometime in the 1880's, John and Louisa emigrated to Canada where they married again, legally this time.
