By the time the census was taken in 1861, Nelson had joined the Royal Artillery as a Gunner and was stationed in the barracks at Woolwich Dockyard. He had also adopted his mother's married name of Constant. His whereabouts have not been established for the 1871 census, but it is likely that he had been posted to India at that time.

The census of 1881 records the family living at Ferry House in Ferry Lane, Walton in Suffolk along with Nelson's widowed mother. Nelson had been elevated to the rank of Bombardier. An entry in the Constant Family Tree on the Ancestry website informs that Nelson, having returned from India, was posted to Landguard Fort as part of the coastal defences guarding the port of Harwich.

There is a photograph of Nelson and his family in the Constant family tree on the Ancestry website. The photograph was taken after Nelson had left the army but showed him in his uniform to which he was entitled as a Chelsea Pensioner. With him are his wife and two children.

Son John Isaac was born in Dartford in 1884, Arthur Samuel in 1886, Herbert Henry in 1887 and Ernest W in 1890. Nelson's wife Eleanor passed away in 1900.

The 1901 census lists the family living at 19 Dentan Terrace in Dartford, Kent and records Nelson as being a labourer at a gun factory. The household comprised all males including 31 year old boarder Joseph J Holyoak. In 1911, they are living at 5 Swan Row in Crayford, Kent. John is back at a powder mill working as a general labourer.

Nelson died in 1920 aged 78. His death was recorded in the Dartford registration district.
