Eric Gordon Swinnerton was born on 18 May 1920 at 101 Ponsonby Street in Toxteth Park, Liverpool. He was the youngest of the ten children of John and Rose Swinnerton.
Eric's father was a Marine Engineer so was away at sea most of the time so Eric would not have seen much of him. His brother Norman helped his mother to look after Eric, especially when he became unwell. When he was not quite three years old, Eric contracted diptheria then bronchitis set in so he was taken to the city hospital where he died on 24 March 1923. His body was taken to his home and laid out in the parlour and his brothers and sisters were obliged file past and kiss him which some of them found upsetting.
Eric was buried in section CH of Toxteth Park cemetery, grave number M-52-352. His parents would share the same plot in due course.
