Emmie Swinnerton was born at 58 Whittier Street in Liverpool on 6 February 1905 and baptised at St.Peter parish church on 5 November the same year.
By the time the census of 1911 was taken the family had moved to 101 Ponsonby Street in Liverpool which would remain the family home. Being a two-up-and-two-down terraced house became more cramped as each new child was born, especially when sleeping for which they would 'top to tail'. Her name was recorded as Emma in that census.
Emmie probably started her education at St.Silas Church of England school then, as with many of her brothers and sisters, she attended Tiber Street school. In the school register, her name was recorded as Emma. When she finished school, the headmistress helped her find a job in a shop.
Emmie marriedStanley William Moore at the Parish Church in Sefton Park, Liverpool, on 9 September 1933. Her sister Doris and brother Bill were witnesses to the ceremony.
For the first two years of the couples married life, they lived in a cottage in a row of six in Fallowfield Road in the Wavertree district of Liverpool. Emmie bore twin sons but they died at birth. They did not have any more children but, when her sister Doris died in 1941, she wanted to adopt Doris' infant son Tony, but Emmie's husband would not allow it.
Emmie worked in one of the big stores in Liverpool. Stanley was employed by Liverpool Corporation Water Department and the couple were housed at 3 Waterworks Cottages in Menlove Gardens West in the Calderstones district for 25 years. The 1939 register shows them at that address. The house was in very poor condition and it became unsuitable for habitation and was pulled down. Emmie and Stan were housed temporarily in a prefab before moving into flat 144 in Childwall Heights, one of the tower blocks in Childwall. Emmie found the place very remote as she rarely saw anybody in contrast to the friendly community in the cottages.
Emmie's husband Stan passed away 1984. Afterwards, she spent most of her time at home but she did take a trip to Hawaii with her sister Edie to visit relatives. The two sisters also made a visit to Canada where Edie's son Mike was living then went on down to USA to visit their brother Norman. Edie often took the train to Liverpool to stay with Emmie and Emmie herself made a return visit a few times.
Emmie died at Fairlight Residential Care Home in Sefton Park, Liverpool, on 22 September 2002 at the good age of 97. She had been a heavy smoker all her life. The causes of her death were recorded as Cardiorespiratory failure and Emphysema and cronary artery athersclerosis.
