The first known reference to Mary Swinnerton 1s in the census of 1851 which shows that she was born about 1846 in Liverpool. At that time the family were living at 32 Walnut Street. The census of 1861 shows as a scholar at home with her parents in Sumner Street in Liverpool.
By 1871 it appears that Mary was employed as an assistant in a drapers shop owned by William Jones in Market Street, Hoylake. In 1881 she was back with her widowed mother and brothers James, Francis and John. Her occupation is not known as the writing on the census return is a scrawl but it may say that she had no occupation. In 1891 Mary and her mother are at 39 Brasenose Road and Mary remains unmarried and with no occupation. A conclusion may be that she was looking after her mother and the household.
Mary passed way on 19 November 1896, just five months after the death of her mother. They both were buried in the same plot as her father George, being grave 755 in section 2 of Liverpool Cemetery at Anfield.
