Biography of Joseph Barratt STENNETT
[Ref. R.580]
Joseph Barratt Stennett was born on 27 August 1898 and was baptised on 18 November at St.Mark's church in Noel Park, Wood Green, Middlesex. He was given the same names as his father and was one of four siblings.
The census of 1901 shows the family living at Oak Tree Villa in Green Lanes, Southgate, Middlesex. Joseph was a pupil at Cholmey House school in Eastbourne when the census was taken in 1911.
According to the census of 1921, Joseph, along with sister Doris and brother Frank, was living with his parents at The Laurels in Church Hill, Winchmore Hill, Middlesex. By now Joseph is part of the management of his grandfather's sweet manufacturing business. The electoral register for 1926 confirms the family still at that address.
On 28 January 1928, Joseph married Mollie Woosnam Willett at the parish church at St.Marylebone, Middlesex. She was the daughter of John and Agnes Willett of Marylebone.
Joseph and Mollie's only child was daughter Josephine, born in 1930. She is listed with her parents in the 1939 register when they were living at Rookery Nook in Broad Walk, Southgate, Middlesex. There were three boarders in the house, being musical director Horace H Sheldon, his wife Beryl P and farmer Edward G Warehart.
When Joseph's father, known as 'Old Joe', retired from Barratt & Co., 'Young Joe' took on his work. This was a thankless task as there was considerable dissent amongst the family board members. He retired himself in 1938 due to poor health.
Joseph's wife Mollie died in 1983. At the time of his death on 4 March 1986, he was living at Weald Hall, Weald Hall Lane in Thornwood, Epping, Essex.
