Biography of Joseph Barratt STENNETT

Joseph Barratt Stennett was born on 4 July 1873 at 2 Underwood Row in Hoxton, Middlesxe. He had an older sister Lizzie but was the only son of Joseph and Elizabeth Barratt.
The family were still at that address when the census was taken in 1881. Joseph's mother was part of the Barrat family who owned a large sweet manufacturing factory and she was part of the management team.
Joseph's location at the time of the 1891 census is not known. On 1 August 1869, Joseph married Clara Elizabeth Barratt at St.Saviour's church in Hoxton. She was a daughter of Frank and Clara Barratt, Frank being a director of Barrat's sweet manufacturing business. Joseph himself was now also employed at Barratt's.
Daughter Lilian Ivy was born in 1897 then son Joseph Barratt in 1898. The census of 1901 records the family living in Oak Tree Villa in Green Lanes, Southgate, Middlesex. Also in the house was nurse Lily Alice Hope, cook and general servant Isabella Alice Lee and coachman Charles E Bywater. Joseph is also listed at that address in the electoral register for the same year.
The electoral register for 1901 shows that Joseph was living with his parents at Oak Tree Villa.
Joseph and Clara were living at Avondale in Palmers Green in 1910 according to an entry in the Post Office directory. The address is the same in the census taken the following year and their children Lilian and Frank were at home with them. The household also supported their faithful cook Isabella Elizabeth Lee and housemaid Violet Irene Hazel Hazell.
According to the census of 1921, Joseph and Clara were living at The Laurels in Church Hill, Winchmore Hill, Middlesex. Their children Joseph, Doris and Frank are at with them but the household no longer had servants living in.
Joseph was known as 'Old Joe' to distinguish him from his son known as 'Young Joe'. When 'Old Joe' retired, 'Young Joe' took over his work.
In 1937, in his retirement, Joseph's name with that of Clara has been found on the manifest for S.S.Arandora Star. They had departed Southampton on 3 March but their destination is not known.
The 1939 register records Joseph and Clara living in Carlsden in Kingsway, Hove, Sussex. They were still at that address when Joseph passed away on 1 December 1953 and Clara remained there until her death in 1964.
