Austin Healey Mk1

To drive this car was a birthday treat to Malcolm from his son William. The original plan was to drive a Jensen Interceptor but that car became unroadworthy the previous day due to brake failure so the Healey was offered as an alternnative. The Jensen was offered free of charge once available within the following year, but as it had to be collected from the Cotswolds, the offer was not taken up.
Malcolm drove his wife Brenda in this car accompanied by William and his wife Marion in their MGB. Their destination was a seafood restaraunt in Lyme Regis where William had booked a table. The convoy stopped for petrol at Bridport and, at that point, Malcolm offered William a drive of the Healey, so he took his mother on from there to Lyme Regis. After the meal, they set off to drive back along the coastal route. Malcolm found the Healy very hard to drive, not least because the drivers seat was too far back for him and could not be adjusted. Besides that, the car would not pull away from a start at all well which made it difficult to avoid omcoming cars whe pulling out of a turning. At a photo stop at Abbotsbury, Brenda asked to travel with William as there was too much heat coming from the Healey engine for her comfort. Soon after the restart, the car developed a clonk in the area of the rear nearside wheel. Malcolm stopped at East Knighton to check it but nothing could be seen. Rather worryingly, it became more distinct as their journey progressed. The convoy went via Corfe Castle to the Sandbanks ferry after which William and Marion made their way home whilst Malcolm and Brenda took the Healey back to Mudeford from where it had been collected. They reported the fault to the proprieter who took the car for a short drive to confirm the problem. |
