Life saving
Many of the pupils who were able to swim went on to train and take the examinations of The Royal Life Saving Society. Malcolm recalls that some of the achievements that the student had to demonstrate was to be able to jump into the water from the top diving board, perform manoeuvres in the water, swim 20 lengths in full clothing, and calm and recover a panicking drowning person. Malcolm received the Bronze Medal in June 1957 and the Bronze Cross in July the same year. To achieve these, certain activities had to be carried out in the water such as jumping in fully clothed from the top board, swimming twenty lengths fully clothed, performing acrobatics in the water and carrying out a save on a panicking victim.
Below is the Instruction Book together with Malcolm's badges and the medals.
