Malcolm did not inherintly dislike cricket but he held a fear of being hit by the hard ball, a justified fear from his prep school days when he was hit on the forehead by a cricket ball. Consequently, he made no effort to show any talent thus avoiding any danger. He regularly played in the 3rd league and, when fielding, unswervingly placed himself at long stop which also gave him plenty of exercise when changing ends.
