At the end of the Lent term, Malcolm was selected to be part of a team of athletes from Worksop to compete in the Northern Schools
championships at Beeston, Birmingham on 2nd April 1958. He ran in both the 440yd and 880yd events, finishing 5th in the 440yd the
back of and somewhere near the 880yd. Having not much idea about pacing himself, he started out too fast in the 880yd and was way
out in front at the end of the first lap despite calls from his teammates to slow down then quickly fell back in the second lap.
This is the number he wore for the event and his letter to his father regarding arrangements for his homecoming.
