Societies

There were always a good number of varied clubs and societies available at Worksop but Malcolm was not inclined to join any of them as he tended to be rather independent. There was a Model Railway Club with a layout in a small room near his house rooms but even with his interest in the subject, he did not become involved.

One advantage of being a mamber of a society was that day trips on All Saints Day each year were generally organised by the societies to visit a venue of interest to them. Malcolm usually managed to scrounge a place with a group that were visiting a place that appealed to him. Not being a member of that particular society meant that he was not bound by their arrangements and could go off and explore by himself. One year her went to York where he walked round the city walls. Another time he went to Leeds to look at the old London trams that had be relocated there.

Early in 1958, a Numismatic Society was inaugurated with Mr.Atkinson as president. Malcolm did join this and was the happy recipient of some Roman coins from Mr.Atkinson at a meeting in his house. The society did not flourish and seems to have dwindled out later the same year.
