Holiday in York in 1989

For their second holiday this year, the family drove up to York where they stayed in a small terraced cottage called Grove Cottage in the western suburbs of the city. It was a well placed location so that the city could be reached by a short walk along the bank of the river Ouse.

The cottage itself, however, was not so ideal. The furnishings were very tatty and, in some cases, broken. There was a street light directly outside the main bedroom window so Malcolm had to make a lining of black rubbish sacks to darken to room at night. The photograph shows Malcolm's blue Rover car parked outside. One day, Brenda struck up a conversation with the next door neighbour from which it transpired that the owner of the cottage was a colleague of Malcolm at Midland Bank.

The family walked into York nearly every day. They visited the museums and Malcolm and James walked round the city walls. The cottage was situated halfway between the city and the National Railway Museum, so a visit there was almost mandatory. York being a railway hub, Malcolm and James went out train-spotting a couple of times.

One day was spent driving out to the moors. A visit to Riveaux Abbey was made and also a trip on the North Yorks Railway at Pickering.
