In October 1981, the family went to stay with Brenda's brother and his family in Whitburn. They lived in part of a large old stone house called The Limes and it included an old wine cellar which they had made into a games room.
During the stay, they made trips to York and Newcastle and Malcolm took the boys on a train trip to Sunderland. Michael took them all to visit Beamish Museum.
