Holiday in Charmouth, Dorset in 1988

This holiday was spent in a charming old cottage in an isolated area called St. Gabriels, just west of Charmouth. The cottage was called St Gabriels Cottage and was near the only other buildings locally which were old farm buildings converted for holiday lets by The National trust.

Although charming, the cottage was fairly small and basic and the staircase did not have two steps of the same size. Nonetheless, it made for a lovely holiday. A particular feature was that badgers came to the back door each night to feed on milk and peanuts which were put out for them as sugested by the owner. The family sat on the back door step and watched them tussling for the food, untroubled by being watched.

The location of the cottage was ideal to take walks along the top of the cliffs so the family took advantage of this. The day after they arrived they walked to Charmouth and back. The next day they went to Seatown by car. On Tuesday 23 August, they took the car to Eype then walked to West Bay then on to Burton Bradstock to see where Brenda had stayed in a caravan with her family as a youngster. On Friday 26 August they took the car to Lyme Regis then followed part of the route of the old railway branch line that ran from Axminster.
