Biography of Malcolm Archbald SMITH
[Ref. S.1]
This holiday was taken early in the year, shortly before Easter when the holiday season was due to begin. Brenda had seen an advertisement in a newspaper for a chalet at Norton Holiday Camp just outside Dartmouth and the rates would be cheap as the full services would not yet be available. When they got there, the place was very quiet which was to their liking but the chalet was not. It was very basic, cramped and not in good repair, however, being quiet was good enough for them.
The catering facilities on site had not opened so Brenda and Malcolm had fish and chips most evenings and other snacks and meals whilst they were out and about. In fact, they were glad to get out each day as the chalet was not only cramped but quite cold. There were frosts overnight and there was ice on the inside of the windows each morning.
The couple spent each day out in their car touring around the locality visiting such places as Bigbury and Slapton Sands. One day they took a circular tour from Dartmouth up the river to Totnes, on to Buckfastleigh on the South Devon railway then back to Dartmouth on a heritage bus. They made a few trips into Dartmouth to eat and look around the old town. They also visited Betty Appleby and took her for tea. She was a neighbour and long lasting friend of Brenda's parents in Paignton.
