Holiday in Honiton Barton, Devon in 1980

Malcolm and Brenda booked a holiday in Devon to take with their Dutch friends, Hans and Ynskje whilst Brenda's mother looked after the children. The
booking was made for the week commencing Saturday 29 March and the plan was for Hans and Yjskje to cross from Holland overnight and meet at Malcolm and Brenda's house on the morning of 29th. Unfortunately, the weather was bad and they had a poor crossing and consequently were still feeling seasick when they got to Verwood. However, the visitors were given refreshment then set of in their own car to follow Malcolm and Brenda.

The keys were collected and the cottage found by driving along a track through a succession of three fields. As soon as they were inside, all the visitors could see that the place was quite unfit to live in but they were on holiday so that was that. The electrical wiring was obviously dangerous so they needed to be careful. The weather was very cold and wet outside but there was a shed full of wood to burn on the open fires. A fire was lit in the front room which did little to warm the place as all the windows had gaps in the frames. It was quickly noticed that all the smoke from the fire was coming back out through the fireplace in Malcolm and Brenda's bedroom so their window had to be opened. The entire store of logs was burned by the following morning.

The next day, everyone took a trip to Lynmouth. Thereafter, trips were made to other places of interest and the evening spent eating, drinking and playing board games.

At the end of the holiday, Hans and Ynskje went on somewhere else and Malcolm stopped at Homiton railway station to take some photographs.
