The family were back in Cornwall again in 1989, travelling down on Saturday 22 July. They were staying at Penstowe Park Holiday Park near Kilkhampton for the second time. This was a good location both for beaches and coastal cliff path walks. The children were keen to go surfing and Malcolm was continuing with his project to photograph the coastline of Britain.
The family went out every day, usually to a different location each time. The children went surfing both at Bude and Widemouth Bay.
On day James went for a horseride and Malcolm went with him. At the stable, Malcolm was asked if he was a regular rider and, flippantly he answered "yes", because he went riding regularly once a year. This backfired on him as instead of being placed with a novice group, he was taken with experienced riders. The leader soon realised the situation but did not say anything to Malcolm apart from some helpful hints as they went along. At one point a Post Office van came briskly round an approaching corner and spooked Malcolm's horse which set off at a gallop with him holding onto it's mane.
On the way home, the family went into Barnstaple and Malcolm took the opportunity to look round the remains of the railway station.
