This was the second holiday this year that Malcolm and Brenda had taken with Dave Johnson and his wife Fiona. The plan was to travel with Dave in his Ford Anglia towing his trailer tent to the Lake District. They met up at Dave's house in Southampton then set off, Malcolm sharing the driving with Dave.
The journey was completed in one day and they arrived at the camp site near Windermere in the late afternoon. The site was fairly busy but they found a spot and erected the tent. They had been amused by a couple arriving in a Jaguar car, pitching a small tent then dissappearing directly into it for several hours then striking the tent and leaving. The evening was spent in the clubhouse having a meal and a few drinks. That night there was a frost and it was extremely cold in the tent.
On checking the forecast in the morning, they found that the weather was likely to remain the same during that week, so they made the decision to pack up and drive down to Cornwall. Off they went, trying to make as much progress as possible. As it became evident that they would not complete the journey in one go, Malcolm suggested they stop for the night at his parents home in Somerset. It is doubtful his parents had any notice of their arrival, but his mother was adept at coping with such situatons and his father was hospitable.
They continued their journey the following morning and found a good location at Carlyon Bay. The principal attraction was the clubhouse which had a very long bar sporting just about every brew available in the country. When they went into the bar the first evening, Malcolm asked what they should do. Dave replied, "we'll start at that end". And that is what the boys did. They had one pint of each beer in sequence and, by the end of the week, Dave had drunk only a ½ pint more than Malcolm. After coming out of the clubhouse at night, Malcolm and Dave would play cards for a while whilst the beer worked it's way through their systems.
The weather was magnificant, hot and sunny all week. They did a good bit of sightseeing during the days, visiting many of the local places. Nightime could have been better as the camp site was next to the main railway line, also the local quarry serviced their trucks at night in an adjacent workshop.
There was a golfcourse attached to the club so Malcolm and Dave played a round. Well, actually it was not a full round as they had lost all their balls by the fifteenth green. The course ran along the top of a cliff and also had furze clumps and mineshafts to contend with. They were actually sharing the last ball until that went over the cliff.
On the journey home, they decided to come across Dartmoor to look at the scenery. They stopped at Dartmeet for a break, but the route out was up a steep hill and Dave's car would not make it. Dave and the two wives had to get out and walk whilst Malcolm drove the car up to the top. Right at the very end of the journey the trailer got touched by a passing lorry going up Lancers Hill in Bitterne, Southampton. Malcolm was trying to get across to turn right and the lorry ignored him and tried to pass. Luckily the damage was slight.
