The rockery in the back garden

Part of the reason for building the rockery was to make a retaining wall to hold back the bank from the back of the cottage.

The first attempt comprised lumps of broken concrete dotted around
on the earth bank which did not look good at all.

The rebuild was thought out better. The retaining wall was constructed on brick courses
with open joints so that there was no build up of water behind.

Once finished it looked morre attractive with a display of flowers.

There was a set of steps at each end of the rockery. These are by the back door of the cottage.

The rockery did need maintaining and is in need of it in this picture.
