The annual dinner dance was held at a prestigious location in London and Malcolm always managed to attend. The first he attended was in January 1959. His partner was June, the girl he had met at school in Worksop.

In 1960, on the second such event he was without a partner, but was encouraged by his manager to ask the office girl who was in a similar situation. This proved to be a double-edged sword as she was the girl-friend of one of Malcolm's colleagues who was married but was going to the dance alone so as to meet up with her. Malcolm knew this but was happy to oblige.

By January 1963, Malcolm was working on a building site at Dedworth Manor in Windsor. Malcolm is with was girlfriend Brenda and was seated with his colleagues from that site. He was still on that site the following year by which time the site staff had changed somewhat.
