Malcolm Archbald Smith was born on 14 November 1940 at his parents home at "Glencairn" in West
End near Woking, Surrey, the eldest of three children. The name Archbald was that of his father but
also the maiden name of his father's maternal grandmother.
Malcolm's definition of ambition was to reach the level of his choosing, not that of others. He modelled himself to his maternal grandfather who undertook most tasks himself and was adequately proficient in most of them.
