John Richard Smith was born in Dartford, Kent in 1912, the fourth of the six children of William and Lillian Smith. The census of 1921, the family were living in The Bungalow in Lowfield Road in Dartford. A map shows the location of The Bungalow which was a dairy where Richard worked with his father.
The next entry of his name is on the 1939 register which shows John as unmarried and still living at the same address with his father and sister Rosie. There was also a 29 year old apparent lodger called Florence S Bravery. John's occupation was listed as Milk roundsman and the dairy, which was run by his father, was located at The Bungalow.
On 14 October that year, John married Doris Lillian Mewett who was the daughter of butcher Albert James Mewett. Daughter Jacqueline Doris was born in 1941, son Anthony R in 1943 and daughter Janet L in 1950.
At the time of his death on 19 October 2000, John was living at 5 St.Lukes Close in Swanley, Kent. He had suffered from heart failure and prostate cancer. His daughter Jacqueline registered his death on 20 October.
