Thomas Ivor Smith was
born at 5 Willow Terrace in the village of Eynsford in Kent on 11 March 1923. He was the second son of Leonard and Daisy Smith and was known as Tommy.

Nothing much is then is known of Thomas except that he joined the Royal Navy. It is known that he was aboard HMS Ark Royal when it was attacked in November 1941 and subsequently sank. Only one member of the crew was lost in the event.

On 1 July 1944, Leonard's home was with his mother at 5 Willow Terrace in Eynsford when he married Violet Kathleen Chandon Cowling at Sutton-at-Hone parish church. She had been living at 6 Smythe Road, Sutton-at-Hone, Kent. They had three daughters, Betty R born in 1947, Patricia A born in 1948 and Shirley F born in 1952.

Thomas remained in the Royal Navy and received a medal in 1956 either for good conduct or long service. His rank at that time was Chief Petty Officer aboard HMS Superb, a Minotaur class light cruiser.

Thomas passed away in the Canterbury area in 1999.
