Ancestors Profile Index for SMITH

Lillian Mary Smith was born in Malt Shovel Cottages in Eynsford, Kent on 4 July 1904, the first of the six children of William and Lillian Smith. Her name was spelled Lilian in the register of births but corrected to Lillian as was that of her mother, also Lilian. She was baptised on 4 September 1904 at Eynsford Parish Church. Her name was spelled correctly in the baptism register.

The census of 1911, the family were living at 1 Wellington Road in Dartford. Lillian's name was spelled correctly on that document. At the time of the next census in 1921, the family were living in The Bungalow in Lowfield Road in Dartford.

Lillian married Gilbert Reginald Freeman on 4 July 1927 at Holy Trinity church in Dartford. He was one of the four children of Thomas and Georgina Freeman and was, at that time, a corporal in the First Royal Tank Regiment of the army. Once again, Lillian's name was spelled incorrectly. It is believed that they did not have any children.

The next entry of Lillian's name (spelled as Lilian) is on the 1939 register which shows her living at her sister Edith's home at 129 Langley Way in Beckenham along with sister Gladys. In the house also were Edith's husband George and son Peter plus Gladys' son Geoffrey. Lillian's occupation was listed as 'Domestic' which may have meant that she helped in the house.

Lillian's husband Gilbert passed away on 26 April 1969 at which time they were living at 13 Pickford Lane in Bexleyheath, Kent. Her death certificate also stated that both she and her husband Gilbert had been proprieters of a greengrocery business. It was known as G L Freeman and the location has been traced to being at 15 Pickford Lane in Bexleyheath. The shop was listed in the telephone directory of 1969.

Lillian had laterly been living at 17 Newton Road in Tankerton-on-Sea near Whitstable in Kent but passed away in The Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury on 5 January 1995. The registrar was informed of her death by her nephew, Peter Richard Crowhurst, son of her sister Emily. Again, her name was spelled as Lilian. The cause of death was recorded as being due to brochopneumonia and was certified by the Kent County Coroner after a post mortem without inquest.
