Henry James Smith was born in Eynsford, Kent early on 26 May 1861. He was eldest of the seven children of Henry James and Mary Ann Smith.
The census of 1871 shows him and his three sisters living with their parents in a cottage in Wrotham Road, Eynsford, Kent. The 1881 census records Henry as an agricultural labourer living with his uncle Alfred Dally and family at Bond Street in Cobham, Kent.
Henry married Annie Field in 1886. In 1891 the census shows them as living at Wallace's Corner in Ash near Sevenoaks. They had no children. His occupation was shown as Contractor and Farmer. The census of 1901 census finds them still living in Ash but now in West Yoke, next door to the Cheary family who may have been loosely related. Henry's occupation was given as Road contractor & Dealer in cut wood. In that respect, it is likely that he employed his brother Albert. In the 1911 census, Henry put his occupation as Farmer and wrote his address merely as Ash, Wrotham, Kent.
According to the 1939 register, Henry and Annie's address is Smith's Cottages, West Yoke, Ash, Kent which was nextdoor to his brother Henry James and family. Henry is now described as a General farmer.
Henry passed away in 1943 having managed to bring himself on from starting as a humble agricultural labourer and working at several other occupations on the way there.
