A son was born to James and Mary Ann Smith of Shoreham, and on 3 October 1875 he was baptised in Farningham parish church. He was the fifth of seven siblings.
The census of 1881 shows the family living at Upper Austin Lodge cottages in Eynsford, Kent. Children Emily, Joseph, Albert and Sidney were in the household as were two lodgers, shepherd Charles Couchman and agricultural labourer Frank Clarke.
By the time the census was taken in 1891, the family with children Rosina, Joseph, Albert and Sidney were living in West Yoke in Ashford. Joseph was listed as a Road labourer as was his brother Sidney and they both were probably employed by their eldest brother Henry.
Thereafter, nothing is known about Joseph. There is a possibility that he may have emigrated but no evidence has been found to support that.
