Albert Smith was born on 19 November 1876 in Crouch, Wrotham, Kent, a son of Henry James and Mary Ann Smith.
The census of 1881 records the family living in Upper Austin Lodge Cottages in Eynsford, Kent. By the time the census was taken in 1891, they were living in West Yoke in Ash, Kent. Albert was a road labourer as was his brother Joseph and most likely they were both employed by their older brother Henry who was a road contractor.
In 1900, Albert married Mary Annie Stanford who had also been born in Crouch.
The 1901 census shows Albert and Mary living at Hartley Wood Corner in Hartley, Dartford. From other sources, that place was a farm and that would accord with Albert's occupation as being an ordinary agricultural labourer as shown on the census return. Son Albert John was born in Hartley about 1905 and Ernest Henry in the same place about 1907. Sidney William was born in Kennington around 1910. In 1911, Albert was living with his wife and children in Lismore in Vicarage Road, Kennington in Ash, Kent. He was listed as being a general carter of timber.
Albert and Mary Annie were still living in the same place when the 1939 register was taken but Albert was now a general labourer.
It is believed that Albert passed away in 1955.
