Ernest Smith was born on 10 May 1881 in the village of Eynsford in Kent, the fourth child of Thomas and Mary Smith. His name is recorded with his siblings on the Family Register kept by his parents.
According to the 1891 census, he is shown as living at home with his family at 7 High Street in Eynsford. At the next census in census of 1901 they are at 6 Gibson Cottages in Eynsford and he is working as a wood carter. He would have been working with his father and brothers as shown in a photograph from that time.
On 24 December 1905, Ernest married Florence Emma Merrill, daughter of Thomas and Rhoda Merrill, at St.Peters church in Islington. At that time Ernest was employed as a nurseryman.
The census of 1911 shows them living at 48 Whiskin Street, Clerkenwell in Middlesex and that he was employed as a cook in a restaurant. They had no children at that time.
Thereafter nothing is known of either Ernest or Florence.
