Profile | Index for SMITH |
John Smith was born in Shoreham, Kent in 1853 and was the last of the ten children of James and Mary Ann Smith.
In 1861, the census shows John living with his family in Romney Street in Shoreham. The census of 1871 shows John and his sister Ann living in a beer house run by his parents in Romney Street in Shoreham. John was recorded as being an agricultural labourer.
John married Jessie Johnston in Eynsford on 4 December 1877. The marriage certificate shows John's occupation as being a policeman. Daugher Ada Ann was born in Bexleyheath around 1879 and son James Reynolds in Belvedere around 1880.
The 1881 census records the family living at 3 William Street, Erith, Kent. John's occupation was shown as Police Constable. Jessie's sister Annie was shown as visiting at that time.
John died in 1889 and his death was recorded in the Greenwich registration district. It is not clear what became of Jessie thereafter but it a possibility that she married Henry James in Greenwich in 1891 and that he passed away between 1901 and 1911.
