James William Smith was born in Rumney Street in Shoreham, Kent on 12 August 1845 and was one of the ten children of James and Mary Ann Smith.
The census of 1851 shows James living with his family living in Romney Street in Shoreham. The census of 1861 records that he was living at Croft Hall Farm, Magpie Bottom, Shoreham, Kent and employed as an Odd boy agricultural labourer.
James married Rachel Taylor at St.Mary's church in Plaistow, Kent on 24 June 1867. Their only child, daughter Sarah Ann was born in Farningham the following year.
James died before 1871 as the census for that year shows his wife Rachel as a widow. The date and circumstances of his death are not known.
