William Smith was born in Shoreham, Kent in 1834 and was baptised in the parish church on 24 September that year. He was one of the ten children of James and Mary Ann Smith.
The census of 1841 shows the family being one of two occupying the Pig and Whistle public house in Shoreham. According to the census of 1851, the family are living in Romney Street in Shoreham and William's occupation is that of agricultural labourer.
William married Alice Gower in Eynsford on 7 September 1857. The witnesses to the signing of the register were William and Sarah Couchman who were their next door neighbours in Eynsford Street in Eynsford.
In 1861, the census records that William and Alice were still living in Eynsford Street and that William and Sarah Couchman were still next door. Both Williams were listed as farm labourers and may well have worked together.
William died in Shoreham on 15 March 1864 having suffered a fever for three weeks. His former neighbour William Couchman was present at the death. The burial took place at St.Martins church in Eynsford.
