James Sapsted was born in Shoreditch, Middlesex on 4 November 1852 and was
baptised in the Parish Church of St.Leonard on 28th. He was the eldest surviving son of James and Martha Sapsted. The census of 1861 shows James living with his parents, older sister Martha and younger siblings at 48 Curtain Road in Shoreditch. He was still living with his parents when the 1871 census was taken but they were now living at 8 Charles Street in Shoreditch and James was employed as a Packer.

James married Elizabeth Ann Williams in 1874. Daughter Florence Maud was born the same year, son James King around 1877, daughter Louisa Martha around 1879 and son Albert Walter around 1880. The Electoral Register of 1878 shows James' address as New North Place in Shoreditch. The census of 1881 shows the family living at 10 Three Tuns Square, St.Giles without Cripplegate in the City of London. James was employed as a porter for the General Post Office.

Son Frederick Thomas was born about 1883, Thomas about 1886, William Norman about 1888 and Albert Edward about 1890. The census of 1891 records the family as living at 17 Norman's Buildings, St.Luke's, Finsbury, Middlesex. James was now a Bagman for the GPO. Daughter Gertrude Ada was born around 1892. By 1901 the family had moved to 5 Langton Street in St.Luke's but James was still employed as a Bagman at the GPO.

The census of 1911 shows James and Elizabeth still living at 5 Lanton Street and son William Norman daughter Gertrude Ada with them. James had progressed to being an Overseer with the GPO. James passed away in the Hackney registration district in 1874.
