James Sapsted was born in Buntingford, Hertfordshire in 1820, son of William and Susan Sapsted. It is not known if he had any siblings.

The census of 1841 shows James living with his parents in the parish of Holy Trinity the Less in the City of London and he was employed as a porter.

On 24 December 1843, James married Martha King at St.John's church in Islington. They were living in Holloway in North London at that time and James was still employed as a porter. Daughter Maud was born in 1845, son William Robert in 1847, son William in 1848. Each of these died as infants. Daughter Kate was born in 1848, being baptised at White's Row Non-conformist Chapel on 19 November that year at which time the family were living at 25 George Street in Shoreditch. She, and Martha Maud who was born in Kingsland, Middlesex in 1850, are registered with their parents on the census of 1851.

Son James was born in 1852 and daughter Florence in 1855. Kate Elizabeth was born in 1857 h. Louisa was born in 1859 and Thomas in 1861. The family are shown as living at 48 Curtain Road in Shoreditch at the time of the census of 1861. With them is aunt Elizabeth Lobby but daughter Kate had passed away by then. James was listed as being a Fruiterer.

The census of 1871 shows the family living at 8 Charles Street in Shoreditch and James' occupation as a Carman. The Electoral Register of 1878 shows James and his son James both registered in Shoreditch at 17 Paradise Street. The census of 1881 shows James and Martha living at 17 Paradise Street in Shoreditch but just Louisa and Thomas still with them. James remained as a Carman. James and Martha were still at 17 Paradise Street when the census of 1891 was taken and daughters Florence and Louisa were with them, also boarder William Knights aged 30 who was a Fishmonger.

In 1891, James and Martha were destitute and had moved to Holborn. As this was not their home parish, they were returned by order to Shoreditch on 9 December. James' wife Martha passed away in 1893. James spent his last year in Holborn workhouse, being admitted on 25 April 1894 and discharged on 8 April 1895 upon his death.
