Biography of Eliza FOLKER
[Ref. O.9]
Eliza Pocock was born in Brighton on 16 December 1823 and baptised there on 14 January the following year. She was the third of the seven children of John and Mary Ann Pocock. The census of 1841 shows the family still at Grenville Place as does the census of 1851.
Eliza married Eliza Pocock at St.Peter's church, Brighton on 21 January 1854 and the event was reported in number of newspapers. Her place of residence at that time was shown as 21 Grenville Place in Brighton.
Eliza and Alfred were living at 41 Warstone Lane, Birmingham when their first son, Alfred Henry, was born in 1855. Daughter Ellen was born in 1856 and George in 1858, both at 127 St.James Street, Brighton. The family was living at 20 Russell Square, Brighton when son Horace was born in 1859.
According to the 1861 census, Eliza was living with her parents at 20 Russell Square in Brighton and had children Ellen, George and Horace with her but son Alfred was away at school. The whereabouts of her husband at that time is not known. Son John was born in August that year, Alfred submitted divorce papers on 2 May 1862 citing that Eliza had left him and gone to her fathers' home with her children. It seems that Eliza had separated from her husband Alfred before son John was born. She declined to return to her husband so the petition was granted on 28 November the same year.
By 1871, Ellen had moved to 31 Osborne Street in Hove and had Ellen and John with her and she was listed as an annuitant. The next census in 1881 shows the same three now living at 28 Drove Place in Hove but she can not be found in the 1891 census, probably due to a misspelling of her name.
A report has been seen, but currently misplaced, that Eliza was convicted for stealing some gloves.
When she wrote her Will, Eliza was living at 8 Burton Road in Kilburn, sharing the house with her cousin Evelyn Folker and sister-in-law Eleanor Folker. On 6 March 1900, she was admitted to Northumberland House lunatic asylum in Green Lanes, Stoke Newington and died there fifteen days later, on 21 March. She was buried in Willesden New Cemetery. Probate was granted on her estate of £17 on 6 October 1900.
