When Brenda turned eighteen in 1961, she did not apply for a driving licence as she was getting a lift to work on a colleague Leanne's scooter. The scooter was swapped for a minivan later in the year but Leanne moved away about a year after starting to give Brenda a lift.
Subsequently Brenda applied for her licence then started taking weekly lessons from a local Driving School. The lessons were on a Monday which was her day off and the instructor would come to the house. The car that she drove was a Morris Minor and she never got to like it. She found it particularly difficult to manoeuvre as the wings were rounded and she could not see the corners of the car. After twelve one hour lessons, Brenda was ready for her test which she took in Aldershot. Unfortunately she failed due to not using her mirror suffiently.
Brenda re-applied for the test which meant that she had to wait for a statutory two months. In the mean time she continued with the lessons but at the second test she failed again for the same reason. During that period, her father had bought her a Powerdrive car in anticipation of her passing the test.
After that, Brenda was fairly despondant and gave up on the official lessons but took to driving her father's Morris Oxford. Her father got rid of the Powerdrive which had proved to be unreliable and purchased a Triumph Herald which Brenda started driving and really took to it. She applied for her test the third time late in 1962 but the waiting time ran into the big freeze on 1963 which prevented the test from taking place for a further three months. The bad weather also meant that Brenda was not getting the practice she needed. This time she passed as was delighted to be able to drive to work rather than cycle or use the train.
