The family took a holiday in Cornwall in August 1983, stopping for a break at Dawlish Warren on the way down. They had rented a holiday chalet at Millendreath which is just a short walk east of Looe. The building turned out to be rather delapidated with a bed propped up on a pile of books and ceiling tiles hanging down.
The chalet was right next to the beach and proved ideal for the children as they could play safely there.
The family took frequent trips out to local places such as Bodmin Moor where they explored the old Cheesewring Quarry. James accompanied his father on some walks along old railway lines and they all took a day trip on the train to Penzance.
On the way home, they stopped for a picnic in a quiet lane at Feniton and took a walk to look at the Exeter to Salisbury railway line.
