Holiday in Torquay in 1964

In the summer of 1964, Brenda and Malcolm went on a week's holiday together in Torquay. They had booked rooms in an hotel from where they travelled around to different places each day. One day they headed east to Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren, another they went west as far as Plymouth and another they spent a day on Dartmoor.

On one particular day they arranged to fly from Exeter airport to Guernsey, but it turned out to be a disaster. Firstly their car was blocked in by another car in the hotel garage. They got to the airport just in time and flew to Jersey. They looked round St Peter port and whilst there Mlacolm bought some packs of cigarettes, checking with the shopkeeper that they were not exceeding their allowance. The flight back was very bumpy and the 'plane kept suddenly dropping like a stone. Some very jolly ladies were trying to keep their drinks in the glasses and laughing a lot. On arrival back at Exeter, Malcolm was asked at the customs checkpoint what he had bought so he listed the cigarettes and some postage stamps. It turned out that he had exceeded the allowance for a day traveller and consequently had to pay the extra duty. The receipt classified him as an 'importer'.

Brenda and Malcolm also sent days on the beach. They went to Mothercoombe where they found a nice quiet spot but got caught by the tide and had to wait for it to recede which made them late for dinner at the hotel.
