Wedding of Charles Marcus Parsons
[Ref. R.7]
Biography |
Marcus married Edith Lilian Swinnerton on 19 October 1935,at the Roman Catholic cathedral of St.Mary and St.Boniface in Cecil Street in Plymouth.
The wedding had been held in Plymouth, and not at Edie's home parish, probably because Marc was working in Plymouth. Their parents travelled from Liverpool to attend the wedding with the exception of Edith's father John who was probaly at sea. As Edith had changed her religion from Baptist to Catholic in order to marry Marcus, there was some dissaproval from her family. There was also disaproval on Marcus' side that he was not marrying into a Catholic family. In view of this, marrying in Plymouth would have avoided any friction.
Marc's landlady Gladys Topp and her husband Edmund were witnesses, and their son and daughter were best man and bridesmaid. Marcus' father also signed as a witness. There are a few pictures of the arrival at the church then the usual poses for photographs after the ceremony.
The couple stayed at 6 Empire Road in Torquay for their honeymoon. A saucy telegram was sent by someone at a time designed to interrupt the honeymoon at an inconvenient time.
