Prior to it's use as a research station, Bawdsey Manor was owned and occupied by the composer, Sir Roger Quilter. The Quilter motto, displayed over the entrance to the Manor, was Plutot Mourir Que Changer (Rather die than change). This is a most inappropriate motto for the station where Robert Watson-Watt developed his ideas for using Radar as an air defence tool. The R.A.F. Bawdsey motto in later years was First in the field.
